History of Phoenix Mountains Preserve
The Phoenix Mountains Preserve was officially designated in the early 1970s as part of the city’s efforts to protect the area’s unique desert habitat and provide recreation opportunities for a growing population. It includes notable peaks like Piestewa Peak, Lookout Mountain, and North Mountain, each with their own trail systems and history.

- Head west on E Squaw Peak Dr

- Take exit 1A to merge onto I-10 E toward Tucson
- Merge onto AZ-202 Loop E via exit 147A toward Tempe
- Take exit 7 for McDowell Rd
- Turn left onto E McDowell Rd
- Continue east for 3 miles
