History of Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park
The park traces its roots to the tragic events of June 2013 when a shift in weather trapped 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots near Yarnell. This was the greatest loss of firefighter lives in a U.S. wildfire since 9/11. In response, House Bill 2624 passed in April 2014, paving the way for a 320‑acre memorial purchased in June 2015. After rigorous planning and trail construction, the park officially opened November 30, 2016, dedicated to preserving the memory of these heroes .
