History of Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights

Constructed in 1928–1930 by Italian immigrant Alessio Carraro, the castle was originally meant to be a luxury resort. Its design, resembling a wedding cake, reflects Italianate and American Art Deco styles. However, Carraro’s dreams of creating a destination resort never came to full fruition.

In 1931, Edward Tovrea, a prominent cattle baron, purchased the property as a private residence. The castle remained in the family until the City of Phoenix acquired it in 1993. After major restoration, the castle opened to the public for tours and now operates as a Phoenix Points of Pride site. Click here to read about the Arizona Capitol Museum, Phoenix, Arizona
