Often dubbed the “Jewel in the Desert,” Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights is one of Phoenix’s most unique historic landmarks. Located just east of downtown, the castle rises mysteriously from the cacti-covered hills, captivating visitors with its romantic architecture and desert beauty.

History of Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights
Constructed in 1928–1930 by Italian immigrant Alessio Carraro, the castle was originally meant to be a luxury resort. Its design, resembling a wedding cake, reflects Italianate and American Art Deco styles. However, Carraro’s dreams of creating a destination resort never came to full fruition.
In 1931, Edward Tovrea, a prominent cattle baron, purchased the property as a private residence. The castle remained in the family until the City of Phoenix acquired it in 1993.
